01 · The brief
What stands in the gap?
In September 2023 the Sycamore Gap tree, one of the most photographed trees in England, was felled overnight.
The question we set ourselves: what could stand in that gap that honours the tree without pretending to replace it?
02 · Our journey
Memory, growth and a two-thousand-year timeline
Blue sky work explored memory, growth and the wall's own two-thousand-year timeline.
The concept that held was an organic sculpture grown from the tree's silhouette, threaded with the stories visitors leave behind, and visible from the same vantage points as the original.
03 · Hand first
Drawn, then built in three dimensions
Every idea here started as a pencil sketch before it became a model. The drawing sets the feeling; the render tests whether it survives contact with real dimensions, sightlines and light.
The two sit side by side deliberately. This is designed work, not generated imagery.
03 · The destination
An open proposal
A concept ready for conversation with the landowners, heritage bodies and the community that loved the tree.
Presented as an open proposal.
