Sycamore Gap

Through the tragedy of the removal of this iconic tree, Roadtrip submitted a proposal for its creative resuse as a sculpture.

We believe that through hardship can come an opportunity for a message to be shared across the world.

Through a collection of sculptures, or one singular one, we hoped to reignite some of the many moments that happened under the tree over the centuries while also encouraging people to protect, celebrate, and immerse themselves in nature.

Below are some of those moments.

“The Sycamore Gap tree will never be as it was. It is a irreversible tragedy, our hope like many is that the National Trust can try to regrow a version of the tree from its stump, or that a new tree grows beside it. Therefore we don’t think a sculpture or experience on the site itself is necessary or right.

Instead we would like to create a heartfelt experience for when people go to visit the remains of the tree. Rather than displaying the tree as it was, we propose that what is left of the tree is framed within a optical sculptural that holds great meaning to the tree itself and the goals of the National Trust. By doing this we don’t wish to recreate a physical tree, we wish to illustrate the soul of the gap tree and what it represented and more importantly now. The version of the tree that will always live within each of us now that its gone.

By visiting our trees our hope is that people around the world will be reminded of the power of nature and our responsibility to preserve it for the good of us all.”
